There are many ways for you to reach from Kolkata to Port Blair by land, air, and even water. A flight is the fastest and most convenient way to get there. Once you are there, you shouldn’t miss a trip to the Cellular Jail.

The History

The Cellular Jail is one of the most historical monuments on the Andaman Islands. Constructed between 1896 and 1906, this jail used as the place of exile for prisoners by the British Officers and is often referred to as “Kala Paani” in historical pages. The Cellular Jail was one of the most feared colonial prisons to be ever constructed and was the place to send prisoners who protested the British Raj.

Today, the stories of all the struggles of the freedom fighters of our country are displayed on the walls of the prison. There is also a gallery dedicated to the photos and tales of the hardships faced by the soldiers.

Visiting the Cellular Jail

The Cellular Jail is open on all days except Mondays and national holidays. It is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, with a one-hour break between 12.30 pm and 1.30 pm. The entry fee is minimal. There is also a sound and light show for all visitors. The show in Hindi begins at 6.00 pm and the one in English begins at 7.15 pm.

The weather is hot and humid during the day, so wearing light comfortable clothes should do the trick. There are a lot of food joints to cater to your tastebuds, so don’t bother carrying eatables with you.
