The exchange of virtual currencies in exchange for real money could be a challenge for many online games, disrupting in-game economies, and skewing player experience or making games pay-to-win scenarios. In RuneScape, the trade in its digital 'gold' is a major issue that has led to bots mining the resource, and accusations that the possibility to purchase 'bonds' within the game for real-world cash amounts to gambling.

Today, Jagex has laid out plans to address the issue. In a blog post which is credited to "The RuneScape Team", Jagex declares that "gold purchased via RWT is a problem in any online game featuring any currency that can be traded" The company also states that the "Anti-Cheating Team has taken a number of steps to combat RWT sellers both in but also out" the company will be taking more drastic measures with immediate start.

With the "growing team and enhanced equipment", Jagex says it will no longer just be focused on sellers of gold and sources through RWT but also buyers. The idea is to curb the demand as well as supply.

Jagex has announced that it will begin sending "messages to players we've identified that are engaged with"RWT" within "the coming hours". "For anyone involved, we want to make it clear that this is your one all-encompassing warning" they added.

Other measures that the developer could consider as punishment for RWT activity include wealth removal - essentially eliminating gains made through illegal means from players' accounts at a server level - and potential bans with RuneScape 3 Gold.
