There are several stages in the production of flannel fleece:

    (1) Substrate production

First, get the base material of the flannel. Depending on the type of end product desired, this material may be cotton, wool, or synthetic textiles. Thinner fabrics such as silk are not suitable for the production of flannel.

    (2) Spinning

Next, textile yarns are spun in much the same way as other fabric yarns are constructed. There may be some considerations for yarns intended for use in flannel, but the main distinguishing mark for this fabric comes at the weaving stage.

    (3) Fabric weaving

Twill or plain weave is often used to make flannel, and woven fabrics can be raised on one or both sides to create a soft texture that hides the weave. Napping is a process that damages spun fibers and gives them the appearance of unspun fibers. Naturally, the fibers will stay together as they are woven into the matrix, but raising does reduce the durability of the fabric to some extent.

    (4) Final processing

Synthetic flannel often has a flame retardant coating that can be toxic. Wool is naturally flame retardant, and cotton flannel can undergo any number of treatments. If you're looking for the safest, most organic flannel on the market, merino wool flannel might be a good choice.
