Did you thought maxi dresses were only worn in the summer? Consider again. While these floor-length beauties are commonly worn in warmer season, with correct layering, maxi dresses may be transformed into a comfortable and attractive winter ensemble.

You may need to put away the backless, thin-strapped styles until next summer, but there are full-sleeved, knitted options that work well in cold weather. As a personal shopper, I frequently show customers how to make the most of their existing pieces; all they have to do is be creative! Here are several ways to wear a maxi dress in winter that will keep you warm and cosy while also looking attractive.

Leather Jacket over a Maxi Dress

Finding a jacket to wear over a long dress can be difficult with its floor-length finish. Longline coats can drown you in fabric, yet cropped coats can also appear unflattering! A leather jacket that matches your waist is ideal for maxi dresses since it looks proportionate and flatters your form. Wear this rebellious, street style outfit with this season's must-have combat boots or white sneakers.

Maxi Dress with Faux Fur Vest

Wear a knitted or flowered long-sleeved maxi dress with a sleeveless faux-fur vest or gillet on top for a comfortable and cosy look. The gillet adds a boho vibe to the design while also adding a winter fashion element to the garment. Finish the ensemble with ankle boots, a winter fedora, and bold sunglasses.

Midi gowns

What about mid-length dresses that fall midway between floor and midi length? Wear thick tights underneath and knee-length boots to keep your legs toasty. In the winter, I love the look of a flowy or knit midi dress with a gorgeous knee length boot. For a well tailored winter suit, finish with a magnificent long coat.

Turtlenecks

Layering is one of the most effective strategies to remain warm in the winter. Wear a lightweight, thermal turtleneck underneath a summer maxi dress or layer a knitted turtleneck jumper on top. Make sure your jumper isn't too long or too short if you're wearing it on top. Check out my styling tip for wearing a jumper over a dress here!

Shirt Gowns

In the winter, a shirt dress? So why not? Because of its versatility, a shirt dress is the ideal winter layering garment. A button down shirt dress can be worn buttoned, half-buttoned, or entirely open like a long coat!

Wear your turtleneck and leather leggings with your shirt unbuttoned from the waist down. Wearing a shirt dress over cropped jeans and ankle boots is one of my favourite combinations for a unique, stylized look. For a nice layered look, add a shorter piece of outerwear. Winter does not have to be gloomy. You may still wear your bright and colourful maxi dresses as temps decrease with the correct layering pieces. You'll be a splash of colour in this otherwise drab setting. How revitalising!
