LED light strips are a new and versatile form of lighting. There are many variations and exceptions, such as mini string lights, but for the most part, they have the following characteristics:

1) Consists of many individual LED emitters mounted on a narrow flex circuit board

2) Use a low-voltage DC power supply

3) Provide a wide range of fixed and variable colors and brightness

4) Ships in long rolls (typically 16ft/5m), can be cut to length, and includes double-sided tape for installation.

You may come across various LED emitter names such as 2835, 3528, 5050, or 5730. Don't worry too much about this, because the most important thing in an LED strip is the number of LEDs per foot, and the power consumption per foot.

LED density is important in determining the distance (pitch) between LEDs and the presence of visible hot and dark spots between LED emitters. A higher density of 36 LEDs per foot (120 LEDs per meter) typically provides the best, most evenly distributed lighting. LED emitters are the most expensive component in LED strip manufacturing, so be sure to account for LED density differences when comparing LED strip prices.

Next, consider the power consumption per foot of the LED strip. Power consumption tells us how much power the system will consume, so it's important in determining your electricity bill and power requirements (see below). A good quality LED strip should be able to deliver 4 watts per foot or more (15 watts/meter).

Finally, do a quick check to see if individual LEDs are being overdriven by dividing the wattage per foot by the LED density per foot. For LED strip products, it's usually a good sign if you don't drive more than 0.2 watts per LED.
