How to Get Stains Out of Curtains
Stains happen. Whether it's from rain damage or a wayward cup of coffee, your curtains could end up stained. Fortunately, most curtains are made to withstand a little staining, so one bad spill with a liquid doesn't mean you're going to have to order new custom-made curtains for your windows. Here are a few ways to get out those stains and get your curtains back up in your windows as quickly as possible.

1. Treat the stain as soon as you can. Just like other fabrics and upholstered items, the sooner you can treat the stain, the less damage is likely to be left behind.

2. Get up as much of the excess liquid as possible. Use old towels to gently blot the curtains and get out the stain as much as possible.

3. Pre-treat the stain. If you have a stain treatment solution available, test it in a small, hard-to-see area of the curtains to make sure it's not going to damage the fabrics or bleach out your colours. If the test area is okay after a little bit, apply it to the stained area of the curtains. If you can't use a stain treatment on the fabric, or don't have one, get the curtains into cold water in the sink or bathtub until you can wash them.

4. Most curtains can be washed at home in your clothes washer. Check the label on your curtains to determine if this is possible. If you can wash them at home, be sure that you follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing to avoid shrinking them or ruining the colours.

5. If washing your curtains in your clothes washer isn't an option, you should be able to get them dry cleaned. Talk to the dry cleaner about the stains when you drop them off so they know to treat for them.

How to Get Smells Out of Curtains
Curtains can gather odours in their fibres, especially if they are placed close to the kitchen or if you smoke or have pets in the home. While most of the time these odours aren't going to be noticeable unless you stick your nose directly into the fabric, some older curtains can start to gather odours to the point you can smell them when you walk into the room. Fortunately, this is an easy problem to handle.

1. If the odours are severe, launder the curtain at home or take them to a dry cleaner to be cleaned. This should take care of any odour issues.

2. If the odours are relatively light or minimal, you can try sprinkling the curtains with baking soda and allowing it to sit overnight. Then gently brush your hands over the curtains to get rid of the excess powder or use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum to get up the rest of the powder.

3. There are a number of products on the market that are intended to get odours out of upholstery. These may be an effective option for your curtains, but be sure to test the product on an inconspicuous corner of your curtains before you spray the entire curtain. That will prevent you from accidentally damaging the fabrics or ruining the dyes with an off-the-shelf product.

How to Get Pet Hair Off of Your Curtains
If you live with pets, then you know how much of a nuisance their hair can be. It's a constant battle to keep your home pet-hair-free, but it's worth it for their unconditional love. If you've noticed that your curtains are picking up their fair share of pet hair, then there are a number of things you can do to get rid of it without resorting to washing your curtains every week.

1. Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. These attachments are typically made with pet hair in mind, so they should do a good job of getting off most of the pet hair.

2. Use a rubber glove. Some of our customers report that they get the best results by simply putting on a rubber glove and rubbing their hands on the curtain. The glove attracts the hair and pulls it out of the weave of the fabric, so you'll get most of it off on the first pass.

3. There are some treatments on the market that promise to help prevent pet hair from getting onto your curtains in the first place. We've heard mixed reviews, so try at your own risk. The best way to prevent pet hair from getting onto your curtains is to regularly vacuum your home and groom your pets.
