NEPAL IS A SHIT HOLE - Thanks to decades of corruption at all levels of government and private business, as well as due to incessant outside influence, Nepal (which was once the real-world Shangri-La) today is nothing more than a glorified shit hole. It's a charming shit hole. It's got the friendliest, kindest people on earth. But it's still a shit hole, nonetheless. Any country where firefighters respond to the biggest fire in the capital without breathing apparatus, is a shit hole. A country with only a small handful of fire engines, of which most don't work, is a shit hole. A country with fire engines that have empty water tanks by the time they arrive (because they're leaking water all the way between the station and the scene of the fire) is a shit hole. You can turn it any way you want, you end up with the same result: Nepal is a shit hole. The fires are windows to the soul of the country: they are emblematic of everything that is wrong with Nepal. They are indicative of the impunity that prevails in Nepal. For example, whenever a major fire happens, like yesterday's blaze in the center of Kathmandu -right between the president's and prime minister's official residences- the fire department arrives 45-90 minutes late...every single time! This is by design, so that the fire rages out of control sufficiently to consume the entire building. This, in turn, leads to huge insurance payouts. That's when the real fun begins for everyone: the kick-backs. Everyone from the fire department to the police investigators (no investigation or report!), from the municipal and federal officials (who conveniently don't purchase new equipment or fund adequate training courses), to the corrupt owner of Kantipur and the Kathmandu Post (who won't expose the people behind the insurance fraud) gets paid off. The same vicious cycle prevails in almost all other areas of everyday life in Nepal. Hence, Nepal is a shit hole. We all know why Nepal is amazing, we all agree that Nepal is special, and we all love Nepal. But nobody is willing to address its problems. The first step is to come to terms with the simple fact that Nepal is a shit hole. I won't apologize for this term, nor will I take it back: it's a factual observation. Now, instead of showing false pride and getting all upset that a foreigner dared to speak the truth about what kind of a sorry shit hole Nepal has become under the incompetence, corruption and outside interference, why don't the people of Nepal show some real courage by rising up and protesting? Not against the government of K.P. Oli, but against the systematic corruption that prevails in Nepal's bureaucracy. Protest the business leaders who make millions of dollars in insurance payouts when their businesses go up in flames, as was the case at Subisu yesterday. Protest that there are no adequate civic services: no running water, no 24 hours of electricity, no fire engines that work, no breathing apparatus for firemen, no training for fire men, no ambulances except for the rich and famous, widebody aircraft that don't get used properly but are purchased using government workers' pension funds, pilots at Nepal Airlines Corporation who don't know how to fly the planes (or land them without auto pilot) because they lack the training, newspaper magnates that make millions in extortion payments, an Indian embassy that basically thinks it is the seat of government (with corrupt and arrogant Indian ambassadors who act like they're the governors of Nepal), and so on. Why don't the people of Nepal use their voices and rise up to protest these injustices? Not violently, but vocally. It's up to the people of Nepal to turn their shit hole of a country into the heaven on earth it was before Nepal was systematically run into the ground. The people of Hong Kong are protesting for their rights and the world is watching. The same could happen in Nepal!
