• Is HACCP certification mandatory in India?

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certification is not mandatory in India for all food businesses. However, it is mandatory for certain types of food businesses, as specified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

According to the FSSAI, HACCP certification is mandatory for the following types of food businesses:

All food processing units have a capacity of more than 100 kg per day or 2.5 MT per month.

All dairy units including milk chilling units handle more than 50,000 liters of milk per day or 1500 MT of milk solids per annum.

All slaughterhouses and meat processing units.

All seafood processing units and export-oriented units.

    All edible oil processing units.

    All food packaging units.

All food storage units with a capacity of more than 10,000 MT.

For these types of food businesses, HACCP certification is mandatory to ensure the safety and quality of food products. However, even for food businesses that are not required to have HACCP certification, implementing a HACCP program can help to ensure food safety and quality and can provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
