Material Thin paper-based decorative surface bonded to a smooth substrate, usually MDF. They are capable of carrying very high-fidelity printed designs, especially wood grain, as well as matte/gloss variations to create optical texture effects that mimic wood grain ticks and similar textures. Such materials are called decorative foils and lightweight papers.

Because they are so thin, it is easy to contour around shapes that are molded to the edge of the substrate. You'll often find them in mass-produced photo frames, wood grains, and solid colors in a variety of glosses. They are widely used in cabinet interiors, drawer sides and bottoms, shelving, and closet systems as well as a home office and RTA furniture. You'll also often find them on the contoured edges of TFL panels, in colors and prints that match the surface design.

These materials cost less than most other decorative surfaces, but they can print extremely realistic designs, usually wood grain. This makes them an excellent and more durable alternative to solid wood and veneer, especially in vertical applications.

Unlike wood and veneer, the colors and properties of foil and lightweight paper can be reproduced precisely year after year. This means you can replace damaged wall panels years after the original installation and still maintain the visual harmony of the space. This is something wood can't do. Its color changes over time, and you'll never find a color that matches the original textured character.

Foil and lightweight paper are the perfect substitutes for fragile and rare wood finishes. With optical effects that mimic the grain of the wood, even experienced woodworkers have a hard time telling the difference between wood and these papery overlays.
